Why Bother With Baby Front Slings

If I was told I could only have one piece of child equipment, without faltering, I would select a baby sling. I did not own a sling for my first three of my seven children. I had no knowledge of them outside of maybe seeing images of women in third world countries using them to strap their babies to them. Something significant happened during the seven years between the births of my third and fourth daughter: the rise in popularity of the internet. With the internet came the easy exchange of ideas.

Other hands free ways to hold your baby are Baby Front Carrier and baby backpacks. Greco and Baby Bjorn are two of the more favorite brands of front carriers. With these, two padded shoulder straps go over your shoulders and criss-cross your back. The straps adjust to accommodate different sizes and shapes. The baby is then slid into a supportive pocket with leg holes that leave the feet dangling. As the baby grows and gets stronger, many carriers allow the baby to face outward. Personally speaking, the baby front carrier seemed awkward to me. If the baby fell asleep while in the carrier, it was difficult to gently remove her to lay her down in the crib. Also, having the baby in front was both physically and visually impairing, making the accomplishments of such tasks as sewing, meal preparation, cleaning, caring for older children, et cetera more difficult.

Baby backpacks have metal or plastic tube frames to stand the frame up in order to introduce the child. Then the frame is lifted and slid onto the back of the adult. I learned that the baby got heavy quickly with this method. Also, I didn’t like the fact that I had no visual contact with the baby while she was on my back. I also couldn’t just sit down and take a rest without having to first take off the backpack. I personally didn’t like the functionality of the backpack for times when the baby fell asleep. Additionally, it was rather large and took up quite a bit of space when it was not in use.

Nine years ago, after the birth of my fourth daughter, I was finally introduced to … cue up the Halleluah chorus … A BABY SLING!!! There are several kinds; my favourite sling style was a long piece of fabric that fed through two metal fastening rings, leaving a “tail” of fabric. The absolute favorite was the Maya Wrap with a pocket sewn into the tail, which I used to carry a couple extra nappies and wipes, and often my car keys and pocketbook! With the baby sling, I could carry the baby high or low, on the front, side, or back, facing forward or facing me, and lying down or sitting up. I was also able to breast feed in a tactful, usually hands free manner, covering any accidental exposure with the tailpiece of the sling, which easily went over my shoulder. As the child grew, the sling easily adjusted to accommodate her changing comfort preferences. Up until my children were about four or five years old, I was able to continuously use my sling for hands free carrying. As a child care center owner, there were many times where I was able to put two children comfortably in one sling allowing me to still use my hands for other things. I frequently used the sling to hold and bottle-feed infant twins.

As you can see, I am a bit biased toward slings, but the other hands free baby carriers might be absolutely ideal for your needs. Look at all options and try a few out. Whichever you prefer, you will be a happier, more productive new parent as you learn to incorporate the joy of nurturing your newborn with the other long list of tasks that you have.

Baby Shower Bingo

They might a bit of a new tendency in UK, France and other European nations, but Baby Shower Bingo are a staple of North American familial traditions, and a well-deserved treat for mothers on the verge of spending many sleepless nights trying to rock a toddler to sleep. Organizing such a special occasion shouldn’t be a source of anxiety; Baby Showers are a celebration of life, where nothing else but a smile on an expectant mother should matter. But to make sure she does keep of it all happy memories, it doesn’t hurt to be a little prepared.

How Is It Organized?
Lots of traditions surround Baby Shower Bingo depending on ethnicity, size of the immediate and extended families and their respective values, but the main goal is always the same: celebrate a pregnant mother who will soon give life. Although circles of friends like co-workers and such might be tempted to treat it like a bridal shower where the entire event is one big surprise, care should be taken not to put additional strain on someone already having to disrupt her usual habits considerably. Therefore many mothers-to-be prefer having a say in the date, location and even guest list for the party since they know more than anyone what their own constitution and mind can take. And since convenience is an issue, such gatherings are more enjoyable when held in someone’s home or an area that allows for privacy, comfort and most of all space to move and breath. Fancy restaurants are a nice time out for anyone, but hard on the body carrying the offspring, especially if it means sitting on a wooden chair for hours. A family living room, private reception area and even patio with swimming pool make stronger settings.

What Should Be Offered?
Like the time and place, gifts should be something where the guest of honor can convey indications of need or desire. Sometimes a financial situation requires help for clothing, furniture and appliances, while other times cute, cuddly or funny are the determining factors. Many expecting parents will register for Baby Showers in stores offering the accommodations to do so, or publish their wish list online. Such practices shouldn’t be looked down on, but instead seen as a genuine resource and tool to make the occasion a truly festive one for the parents, since they are after all the reason for the Baby Shower to happen in the first place. Regardless of someone knowing the parents’ true wishes, great Baby Showers will usually have guests bringing individual gifts to be kept as a sentimental attachment toward whom offered it, after use of course, while the gathered group as a whole will pitch in together to offer an additional gift of greater cost and significance, such as bedroom furnishings, imposing toy sets or the quintessential spa treatment for mommy, always a surefire winner. But most of all, gifts should be from and for the heart, whether they are costly or completely handmade.

What Should Happen?
Like any self-respecting party, Baby Showers shouldn’t consist in guests sitting around and looking at each other. The occasion calls for activities to center on the mother, and turn the gathering into a game about and for her, with activities ranging from the details of the pregnancy itself to fun ways of opening gifts and sharing the obligatory (yes, absolutely obligatory) cake. Baby Showers do not need to be taken as commercialism in the vein of Christmas or Easter, but as a day of relief, happiness and distractions for a well-deserving mother. Any activity undertaken should be so with such a thought in mind. Good time, great company, let’s bring in Baby!

Discovering The Top Toys For Christmas

Christmas-time buying styles for parents significantly vary.
Some parents shop what seems like eons ahead of time to get top toys for Christmas others cram all their shopping in at the last minute.

Doing your Christmas shopping the right way means taking advantage of various options – online stores that have massive toy inventories, considering gift certificates, and getting everything at once are some good ideas. Each of these unique options has advantages over traditional methods and gift items, but children really desire the Christmas 2008 toys. If you want to err on the side of caution, it’s important to go for some of the most popular toys that are out there.

One of the top Christmas toys for preschoolers is absolutely the Kid-Tough Digital Camera. Because it is merely $48, the camera falls into the realms of being both affordable as well as a great toy. This camera has won numerous awards for being the best-selling digital camera, and it’s the only one that’s approved for pre-school children. The use of the camera is widespread amongst pre-schoolers, and teachers are very happy about it. Because the camera’s buttons are very easily identifiable, the camera is a whiz for any kid to take advantage of. The 1 ½” LCD screen on the camera makes viewing the photos kids have taken very simple. Even the littlest child in the family can enjoy the pleasure of taking pictures, and it’s the perfect gift for Christmas because the child will immediately start taking pictures around the house for the holiday photo album.

One of the top Christmas toys for toddlers this season is the Kota. A toy that will bring joy to young kids, Kota Dinosaur is programmed to be extremely affectionate. Just like a real pet, kids can show affection for Kota Dinosaur by getting on his back. Kota has sensors in his mouth, so when something is placed in it, his mouth will move – like he’s really chewing! Kids become so happy when they see Kota smile wide, like it’s really alive. Kota can turn his head and wag his tail. Kota is a toy that can definitely be shared by siblings. Like a pet, only better, Kota is a great toy for kids to show affection towards.

When investigating the Christmas 2008 toys, one will come across the Rose Petal Cottage. The Rose Petal Cottage is a great toy for young girls who want to play at being real moms in the country. To bring the Rose Petal Cottage in and out of storage is very simple. There’s no better way to let your little girl mimic the duties of a good housewife. This toy gives your little girl a house of her own to play in, decorate, and learn to take care of. Girls are overjoyed when they can bring their friends over to their own, “real” home. The Cottage is a great choice for girls ages 5 and under.

While there are many innovations amongst the Christmas 2008 toys, they are no more difficult to use then toys were ages ago. The great thing about these toys is that even though your kids are reaping the benefits from advancements in toy-making, their toys are still very simple on the surface.

Baby Carrier

When I discovered I was having child number two, I recognized from experience that I had to find a way to free my hands up. I had shopped for baby packbacks and baby slings attempting to find the perfect one. While I was at a yard sale with my tiny new baby and other kids in tow, I came across just what I had been looking for. New in the box! Wow, imagine my exhilaration. Now, while I can’t tell you that you will find your sling for the same bargain price I paid but I will tell you that it would have been worth that price many times over. I instantly started using the sling. I took the sling out of the box, put it on around my neck, and with a few adjustments, went to the rest of the yard sale with my hands free.

Baby Slings are not the only option for carrying your infant; often you will see babies in front or back carriers as well. I have also used these, and while they were good options, I didn’t get the same use out of them. My little boy still tries to get me to carry him in it, and he is five! I refuse to sell it because I may have Grandchildren one day!

Women in other cultures have long experienced the benefits of the baby sling; your baby is close and feels secure when near your body. This eradicates a lot of fussiness some infants go through. It also frees up your hands to do other mom stuff - like laundry, dishes, cleaning and with a little practice, you become a pro at bending with a baby on board.

Depending on what type of activities you do, select your babys carrier to suit your life. Slings are my personal preference, because I have a lot of practice using one. I think they are the simplest to get on and off, and dont require any fastening. Front and back carriers are better if you are looking for something to use less frequently, as your baby will need to be strapped in and this can be time consuming. These are also a little more comfortable for extended outdoor activities like hiking.

Whatever baby carrier you use, make sure that you keep trying it until it feels natural. Many people give up because they are unaccustomed to carrying the extra weight of a baby. Persevere and you’ll discover it gets easier over time.
